CITRUS CARE CALENDAR - November 2 – 29

Get Set for Winter

Heading into the winter months you will want to be ready for cold weather care. Have covers ready just in case and watch the weather. Feeding is complete for the year as we do not want to encourage any new growth as it is the most sensitive to cold.

Why Is There an ISD Tag on My Citrus Tree?

Why Is There an ISD Tag on My Citrus Tree?

If you’ve purchased a citrus tree and noticed an ISD tag, you might be wondering what it means. Here’s the scoop:

What Is an ISD Tag?

An ISD tag indicates that your citrus tree has been treated with a systemic insecticide, as required by a states Department of Agriculture.

This treatment occurs at the nursery before the tree leaves the screen house, and the tag includes:

  • The date of application.
  • The expiration date—typically six months after the application date.

Why is this important? It’s all about protecting your citrus tree from serious threats like HLB (Huanglongbing), also known as citrus greening.

What Does the Treatment Protect Against?

While not all psyllids (tiny pests that feed on citrus trees) carry HLB, they’re the primary vectors for this devastating disease. The insecticide helps safeguard your tree by targeting psyllids and other pests such as:

  • Aphids
  • Whiteflies
  • Citrus leaf miners

Bonus Protection:

Fewer insect feeding points mean fewer open wounds on your citrus tree leaves, which reduces the risk of other issues, like citrus canker.

What Can Homeowners Do?

1. Continue the Fight Against Citrus Greening

To keep your tree healthy, it’s essential to maintain insect protection. Systemic insecticides remain one of the best tools in this fight.

A popular and effective choice is Imidacloprid, a compound that mimics nicotine to disrupt the nervous system of pests. Many products containing Imidacloprid are available for homeowner use.

2. Use the Right Product

We recommend a product like BioAdvanced Fruit, Citrus, and Vegetable Insect Control.

  • It’s widely available at nurseries and retail stores.
  • Always follow the label directions for safe and effective use.

Why This Matters

The ISD tag isn’t just a label—it’s a promise of protection. By understanding its purpose and taking steps to continue pest control, you’re giving your citrus tree the best chance to thrive.
